Within the framework of ADEMU project, the Law Department held a two-day intensive workshop, organized by Claire Kilpatrick, Giorgio Monti, Päivi Leino-Sandberg and Thomas Beukers.

The concentration of wealth is holding back growth

Professor Thomas Cooley, who is the Advisory Committee Chair for the ADEMU project and also the Paganelli-Bull Professor of Economics at the Stern School of Business, NYU, recently shared his views on how the concentration of wealth is holding back growth. The interview with Prof Cooley was printed in the Spanish newspaper ‘La Vanguardia’:

Age? I am already a demographic minority. Born in Vermont: my school only had one classroom. I was an engineer at IBM, but I was fascinated by Economics: I was Dean of NYU and an advisor at Standard & Poor’s. To create jobs, train your unemployed workers.  Abstract

On 8 and 9 October 2015 the University of Cambridge hosted the kick-off conference for the ADEMU (A Dynamic Economic and Monetary Union) Project, part of the Horizon 2020 work program topic ‘Resilient and Sustainable Economic and Monetary Union in Europe’.[1] The objective of the ADEMU research project is to reassess the overall fiscal and monetary framework of the EU and, in particular, the Euro Area. Legal and Institutional Dimensions of EMU Intensive Workshop Agenda

Took place October 22nd-23rd, 2015

Workshop description:

The workshop included three hour sessions on each of the following four themes:

  1. Conditions posed to legal change in reaction to the Eurozone crisis at both EU and national level (such as competence constraints, fundamental rights limits)
  2. Legal aspects of the overall new EMU package (e.g. Macro-economic Imbalance Procedure, Excessive Deficit Procedure, Broad Economic Policy Guidelines)
  3. Legal aspects of risk-sharing mechanisms (e.g. European Stability Mechanism, prospects for Euro-bonds)
  4. Legal aspects of banking union (emphasis on: Single Supervisory Mechanism, Single Resolution Mechanism, deposit insurance)
